FAQ [ Filing Claims ]

1. How do I file my claim?

Any account holder with a credit balance in a failed bank will be required to provide the following while making his or her claim:

  • savings passbook(in the case of Savings Account);
  • original of the Certficate of Time Deposit(CTD);
  • unused cheques(in case of demand deposit);
  • last bank statement(where available);
  • withdrawal booklet, bank IDCard (where available);and
  • valid indentification card/document.


2. How do I as an individual prove that I am the account holder?

Show the paying agent bank the following:

  • An Interntional Passport or Residence Permit;
  • Identity Card(ID) issued by Government agencies to their employees, i.e Central Bank, Armed Forces of Nigeria, etc;
  • Licence/IDs issued by Government agencies to the public i.e. Driver's Licence, Postal ID, etc;
  • Professional Regulatory Body IDs, e.g ICSA, ICAN, etc;
  • IDs issued by reputable private employers;
  • In case of accounts in the name or for the accounts or benefits of minor or in the name of guardian in trust for a minor, any of the listed IDs; or where the minor is claiming for himself, a certfied photocopy of birth certificate, in the absence of which, affidavit of guardian or joint affidavit of two disinterested persons establishing identity of minor/relationship; and student ID if applicable; or
  • In case not falling under the above, the indentification may be established by confirmation made by a senior public officer or the village Chief or the Secretary to the Local Government Council;
  • Current Credit Cards.
  • For depositors resident outside Nigeria they should be requested to give a letter of authority to an agent who will in turn give an indemnity and swear to an affidavit.

3. Additional Requirements- Limited Liability Companies

  • Copy of Certificate of Incorporation issued under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990;
  • Authorisation Letter sealed by the company authorising the person to sign documents for claiming or receiving payments of insured deposit(s);

4. Registered Firms/Partnership:

  • Certificate of Registration under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990; and
  • Partner's resolution in respect of person(s) authorised to sign documents in claiming for Payment of insured deposit(s).

5. For sole Proprietorships:

  • Certificate of Registration under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990

6. Registered AssociationsClubs:

  • A resolution in respect of person(s) authorised to sign documents in claiming for receiving payment of insured deposit(s); and
  • List of trustees of the Association.

7. In the case of wound-up(Companies/Partnership/Association):

  • A notice of winding up / Dissolution by the Corporate Affairs Commission published in the Gazette.

8.For Claims on account of deceased depositors:

  • Proved Will/Letter of Administration or order from a Court of Law administering the estate of the deceased;

9. In case of joint account where one party is deceased, the rule of survivorship should not apply. A letter of:

  • Administration is required before payment can be made;
  • Death Certificate of the deceased depositor.
